Political Garbage Equal Opportunity

Election season triggers an avalanche of mailers, and some are suspicious and filled with falsehoods.

I have been treated to daily political garbage landing unbidden in my mailbox and it makes me sick. I generally vote Democratic, even more so now that most Republicans have sworn allegiance to Keep-Your-Hands-Off-My-Rich-Buddies Grover Norquist, over their own constituents and country.

The tone of the mailers, filled with falsehoods, displays an immature and unstable mind. I am talking about the appalling mailers against Linda Parks who is running for the 26th Congressional District.  She was targeted by these knuckleheads in D.C. because she had the audacity to choose to be an independent. How dare she! In the universe of politicos, Parks stepped on the third rail of partisanship.

Here is what the mailers say, in the most obnoxious way possible. They say Parks (and the Washington Republicans) will end Medicare by replacing it with vouchers. They say Parks will “allow tea party extremists to continue their reckless and divisive agenda.”

The mailers have a photo of Parks alongside Sarah Palin, Bush, Cheney, and the non-politician Rush Limbaugh.  Hello! This just in! Limbaugh is on the radio, and, unlike the above group, has never run for or been in the executive branch. At least, not officially.

Do they really think these mailers will get votes for their Democratic candidate, Julia Brownley? No one out here knows her because she is new to the area. She had to rent an apartment in the district to qualify for the ballot. Regardless of her experience and noble causes, even Brownley took a ride on this infantile bandwagon with one of her own mailers. Placing a photo of Parks along with Newt Gingrich and Tony Strickland, Brownley said that Parks “was inspired to become a Republican when Newt Gingrich was at the peak of his power,” and Parks “refused to take a strong stand against the Ryan Budget…” which slashes Medicare.

At least Brownley’s more recent mailers have stuck to why we should vote for her instead of the inane junk published by the Democrats.

Democrats are not the only political hacks to have triggered an avalanche of vicious mailers against Parks. Two years ago, when Parks ran for county supervisor against Strickland’s wife, Audra, the local branch of the Republican Party did exactly the same thing, sending up to three mailers a day. In fact, the similarities are mighty suspicious.

I believe Parks won that election against Strickland by an impressive landslide. Now the other side is poised to successfully deep-six their own candidate in their gleeful romp in outright lies. It is almost as if this mailer campaign were designed to boost the popularity of Tony Strickland. Almost.

If this is an example of how the Democrats are handling other critical races, we can look forward to the Bush Years 3.0. Expect more mind-boggling theft from Wall Street, more crooked foreclosures, more education laws based on pithy titles like “No Child Left Behind.” True, no one moved forward, so no one is left behind. You will love the foreign policy based on the ranting of fascists from the 1980s and domestic policy grounded in jingoisms like “My Country, Right or Wrong,” or “Reagan Proved Deficits Don’t Matter,” or “No New Taxes.”

I know, there I go again.

To both political parties and their campaigns: a pox on both your houses!
