Ushering in a new level of multiculturalism within the indigenous community

The words of Oren Lyons were what inspired us to call our gathering the "Children of Many Colors Powwow." In 1994, at Claremont College, Lyons gave a talk, and one of the many profound things he said was "Every woman is a mother, and every man an uncle, to every child, no matter what color they are." To be there and to hear those words was to feel both the inspiration of his wisdom, and the weight of the responsibility that his wisdom - the wisdom of the generations - imparted on you. It's not all about words, and talking the talk...it's about walking that walk.

It is with immense gratitude for accepting this commitment that we welcome Yendi Nieto to our 2024 head staff as our head woman dancer.

Yendi is an honored member of our community - she is a mom, business woman, regalia maker, dancer, and wife of Tule River Yokuts Tribal Council Member Johnny Nieto. And for what might be the first time in the history of the urban powwow, she will be bringing her cultural dance style - the Danza Azteca - into our powwow arena as a part of our head staff.
