Residents Plan Council Vacancy Ordinance Information Meeting
The group will meet Tuesday and Jan. 17.

Updated 10:30 a.m. Jan. 11 to clarify Mikos' proposal is a compromise and she does not support an ordinance allowing for the City Council to decide whether to hold an election or appoint someone to a vacant seat.
A group of Moorpark residents concerned about currently before the City Council is planning a set of meetings to share information about the proposal.
The ordinance in question deals with how the city should fill vacant council and mayoral seats if someone has to vacate them mid term. The ordinance, proposed by Council member Roseann Mikos, will allow for a signature gathering period in which residents can petition to fill the vacant seat by means of a special election. If 10 percent of the city’s registered voters don’t petition for special election within 30 days, it will be up to the council whether to appoint someone to the seat or hold an election.

Mikos proposed the ordinance as a compromise. Whereas she supports having an election to fill vacant seats, other council members believe the decision to have an election or appoint someone to the seat should be left to the city council.
