Salmonella Threat: Pepper Sold at Big Lots Recalled

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Big Lots have announced a recall of black pepper because of possible contamination with salmonella.

Routine testing done by the FDA found the bacteria.

The Fresh Finds pepper was sold in 3.53 oz. (100 g) plastic jars with Best By Dates of 6/30/17, 7/01/17, 7/02/17, 7/22/17, and 7/23/17. The UPC code is 4 11010 98290 1.

The FDA advises consumers to throw away the product immediately.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), “A person infected with the Salmonellabacterium usually has fever, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea beginning 12 to 72 hours after consuming a contaminated food or beverage. The illness usually lasts 4 to 7 days, and most persons recover without antibiotic treatment. However, the diarrhea can be severe, and the person may be ill enough to require hospitalization.”
