Tom Boy Times Two

Having a girl doesn't mean everything has to be pink.

Moorpark Mom Week #29

Sugar and Spice, and All That’s Nice

We just found out we are expecting our second little girl this summer. Thoughts of two weddings, two prom dresses and double the trouble when it comes to boys give me a partial panic attack. Yet there are ways it will be easier this time around. We can reuse that pink and brown stroller, those ruffled dresses, and the expensive ballerina crib bedding. The best part is that Kaila and her new sister will inevitably become best friends. I know there will be arguments over their shared bathroom or clothes no doubt, but their special sister bond will truly be special.

Luckily for my husband, we have a male dog, otherwise our house would be lacking in testosterone—even our red-devil cichlid fish is female.

Kaila is happy with the fact that she is going to be a big sister, regardless of the gender. She even announced the news to everyone at her preschool the day after we had the ultrasound.

When I discovered I was pregnant with my first-born, I wanted to have a boy incredibly badly. Thoughts of teaching him to snowboard or perhaps raising a professional baseball player were dancing in my thoughts. Now, almost five years later, I wouldn’t change a thing. My daughter is the best thing that has ever happened to me. There’s no reason she cannot hit the slopes with me or maybe even become the first professional woman baseball player.

Everything doesn’t need to be pretty in pink. Although I won’t have the experience of raising a little boy—because this baby girl will be the final member of our family—there’s no reason it should be any different. Kaila loves cars, getting dirty and pretending to fix things with her little toy toolbox. Yet she also likes to dress up like a fairy princess and play with her talking dollhouse. Like me, she is a little bit of a tomboy but has that girly side as well.

I feel my most important goal in raising my two daughters is to teach them to become confident and independent women. Although I will encourage them to play sports and to be assertive, the reality of sexism is something I will need to prepare them for as well. I will also encourage a healthy body image for both of my little girls, because I know all too well, this is an issue we have all dealt with.

Although raising two children—whether two girls, two boys, or one of each—is challenging, I will try to enjoy the times I have with both. Before I know it, my girls will be choosing their college or picking out a wedding gown. One thing they will now have is a sister with whom they can share these special moments.

Now I shall begin to research locks for my closet for the future. There goes my clothes collection!
