Update: Slight Increase in DUI Arrests Over Memorial Day Weekend

Various law enforcement agencies across the county brought in 56 DUI suspects compared to last year's 53.

Memorial Day weekend DUI arrests are up by three in Ventura County compared with last year. The four-day crackdown ended at midnight last night.

Avoid the 14, the county’s multi-jurisdictional crackdown on impaired drivers, reports a total of 56 such arrests, compared with 53 last year.

“It’s encouraging that only a few more people were arrested this year compared with last,” said Sgt. Randy Latimer of the Oxnard police, campaign coordinator. “We had 91 arrests two years ago, so this is an improvement.

Enforcement included a sobriety checkpoint in Ventura, saturation patrols in several cities and maximum enforcement by the two local offices of the California Highway Patrol.

Two people died in a Saturday night crash on SR-126 when their car went down an embankment. CHP Officer Steve Reid says the crash is still under investigation, and that it is now unknown if alcohol was involved.

Avoid the 14 will hit the road again for the Independence Day holiday. A three-week summer mobilization starts in mid-August and continues until early September.

The California Office of Traffic Safety funds the crackdown through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
