Winner Announced for Recycle Program at Local Elementary School

VCPWA’s IWMD is excited to announce Isabella Coleman, a 5th grade student from Sunset Elementary School, as the winner of the poster contest. The recycling poster contest was open to all 5th grade students in public and private schools in the unincorporated area of Ventura County.

Students were tasked with creating a poster to promote recycling, along with a catchy slogan. The winning poster was unveiled following an EcoHero assembly at Sunset Elementary School in Oak View on April 12, 2018. The winning poster will be mounted on one of E.J. Harrison & Son’s recycle trucks. Isabella also received cruise tickets to the Channel Islands, donated by Island Packers.

The poster contest is a fun way IWMD integrates recycling concepts in the elementary schools. Another unique way to connect students to environmental awareness is by teaming up with the Ventura County Watershed Protection District to offer The EcoHero Show: An educational program for students that teaches them how their actions impact the ecosystem and wildlife using an earth-loving, sustainably-responsible super hero.

“Mr. Eco has been making the rounds to schools in Ventura County,” said Lisa McCullough, Environmental Resource Analyst for the Ventura County Public Works Agency. “His teaching is done in a very creative way that students can relate to: through rap songs and dance, as well as with teacher and student participation.”
