In 2006, I started a bakery cafe with a few local investors. Although it was my first time operating a business, we were able to focus on activities that generated more revenue because I was able to set up and maintain our financial records using QuickBooks Pro. Due to my background and experience as an information systems professional, I quickly learned the inventory management and point-of-sale systems we used, enabling me to link them with our accounting system.

Working with an accountant, I was able to communicate timely and relevant financial information our LLC members needed for their strategic management decisions. Being able to integrate our store’s daily sales operations with support functions (such as accounting, marketing, and HR/payroll) gave me the edge in transitioning to becoming a small business management consultant in the years following that business startup project. Since then, I’ve helped many small businesses become more profitable.
