Local author Ruth Galm will read from ”Into the Valley”, a novel set in San Francisco and the Central Valley. Books will be available for purchase and signing. Registration not required.
“It’s always a pleasure to read a first novel by a writer whose short stories have made a strong impression, and Ruth Galm’s “Into the Valley” is just such a novel. The San Jose-born, San Francisco-based author starts the book in the summer of 1967 as her central character, B., writes a counterfeit check and leaves San Francisco for the Central Valley. Unmarried, 30 years old, B. is an unlikely drifter, but as she moves from town to town, a strange set of worries -- fear, ennui and an ailment she describes as “carsickness” -- propel her forward. Galm introduces a cast of supporting players that leave B. feeling increasingly restless, and as her story moves toward its unsettling finale, the author evokes the desolate interior landscape of writers such as Joan Didion.” – San Jose Mercury News, July 18, 2015.
