Cause of Fire on Lola Lane in Mountain View Under Investigation

A deceased person was inside the home, plus ammunition was exploding and a power line came down.

Investigators this afternoon were still on the scene of a one-alarm residential fire that resulted in a death in Mountain View earlier today, a fire department spokeswoman said.

Firefighters were dispatched to the 700 block of Lola Lane at 3:05 a.m. and the first units arrived on scene at 3:09 a.m., according to Mountain View fire spokeswoman Jaime Garrett.

Firefighters had to contend with multiple safety issues resulting from a downed power line in the backyard, as well as the presence of firearms and ammunition inside the burning building, Garrett said.

“Some of the ammunition was going off as we arrived, so it was definitely something we took into consideration as we were working to put the fire out,” Garrett said. “To my knowledge it didn’t change our operation, but it was something we were definitely aware of and worked around.”

Neighbors notified personnel on scene that it was possible a person might still be inside the home, so firefighters searched the residence, Garrett said.

“Unfortunately we did find the deceased inside the home,” she said.

Details about the person who died were not immediately available and no other injuries were reported. Garrett said because the decedent had “a lot of firearms,” those weapons had to be secured before officials from the Santa Clara County medical examiner’s office could respond to the scene.

The cause and origin of this morning’s fire remain under investigation, Garrett said.

The entire house sustained damage as a result of the blaze, she said.
