Epic ACG Fest 2024 - A Retrospective

The annual Epic Animation Comic Game Fest is now over. We had a great time sharing international animation with the Silicon Valley.

Brazilian feature film ‘Abah and his Band’ opened the festival. This is a great children’s film about political action and the power of music. It was beloved by the jurists, who gave it the prestigious Grand Jury Prize.

We were honored to collaborate with O!PLA again this year. They are a Polish film festival dedicated to recognizing the incredible talent of the Polish animation community. ‘Wait for Me in a Dream’, directed by Natalia Durszewicz, received the ‘Best Dramatic Film’ Award for its bittersweet portrayal of an elderly couple.

The festival showcased a strong variety of animated films from through the world. Iran’s ‘Before Heaven’ received the award for Best Mixed-Media. This masterpiece makes us feel for stick figures drawn onto a wall. French filmmaker Etienne Husson’s short documentaries are visual poems. His film ‘Black power is green power’ was honored with the award Best Visuals in Animation.

Rising webseries Maeya TV was on site to interview special guests. They met with actress and producer Libo Li, to discuss her films ‘On Matriarchy Lake’ and ‘Tibetan Hearts’. She spoke about the challenges of producing films during the pandemic and the importance of giving voice to cultures not frequently featured by Hollywood.

Maeya TV also spoke with comic writer Allen Ling about his graphic novels. Ling’s work is varied and includes adult graphic novel ‘The Rescuer’, a superhero story with themes of mental health, as well as children’s book ‘Luna Goes to the Moon’, about a cat astronaut.

Libo Li and Allen Ling both featured as panelists Sunday, alongside EACG founder and film producer Lynn Tang. They led an illuminating discussion about rapid changes the animation and comic industries are facing. New developments in AI and globalization have created opportunities and challenges for creators.

The festival ended with the Red Carpet and Award Ceremony, a celebratory night honoring the winners of EACG 2024. Local performance groups entertained the audience with modern interpretations of cultural dances.
