Local Student Advances to the Televised Scripps Spelling Bee Area Finals!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Mountain View, California - February 27 2017 Yew Chung International School of Silicon Valley will be tuning in to the televised Scripps Spelling Bee Area Finals on March 18th. One of their 5th graders, Justin Kwan, will be traveling to San Francisco's CBS studios to participate in the event. This is the first time YCIS has participated in the Scripps Spelling Bee.

The Scripps Spelling Bee was started in 1925 by a newspaper as a way of creating "general interest among pupils in a dull subject." E.W. Scripps Company took ownership of the Bee in 1941.

10-year-old Justin Kwan started at YCIS as a preschooler with little experience speaking or writing in English. With the support of his family, his teachers and through his own determination and hard work, Justin now excels in English.

"We are so proud of Justin and his hard work and determination in preparation for the various stages of the Scripps National Spelling Bee. His family and his teachers, especially our school spelling bee co-coordinator Mr. Aaron Wheatley, have shown tremendous encouragement and support along the way." says YCIS Principal Annette Hanson, "We feel honored to have Justin represent YCIS Silicon Valley at the area bee
finals!"

Justin will continue to prepare for the Bee by practicing speaking on stage, reading and studying word roots and spelling patterns. Along with awards for spelling, Justin has also won honors in mathematics and
Mandarin speech contests. His passions for martial arts, sports and drama help round out his learning experience.
