National Children's Dental Health Month - February

Proper Oral Care for All Our Children. Lack of Care Can Lead to Diseases and Death.

It is reported that one in three children are living without dental insurance. Dental care is often a subject that is overlooked, and in a 2000 report, the surgeon general stated that the most chronic ailment for children is tooth decay and the most at-risk population is underserved children. Children that do not receive regular dental cleanings and checkups are at a greater risk of infection which could lead to other life threatening diseases, according to Dr. Rutner.

“February is National Children’s Dental Health Month and is an opportunity to shine more light on the growing population living without dental insurance and lacking proper dental care,” Dr. Rutner said. “All children should begin attending bi-annual dental checkups by age two or three and start receiving dental cleanings at age three or four.”

Dr. Rutner added that regular dental cleanings and examinations should not be seen as cosmetic procedures but instead could mean a matter of life or death. In 2007, Congress held a hearing to address the fact that more than 25 million children lack dental care after a 12-year-old Maryland child died from an infection stemming from an abscessed tooth.
