Cochlear implants are an amazing technology. Our son, Neal, has been
hearing
with cochlear implants for about 12 years.
As with most technology, there have been improvements over time.
Currently Advanced Bionics (the company that
manufactures Neal’s cochlear implants) has a new processor available.
This processor would help Neal hear better. It would also be smaller
and less heavy to wear
behind his ears, give him the ability to use Bluetooth technology, and
give him the option to use non-rechargeable batteries. With his
current processors, if an extended power outage were to occur, Neal
would soon be
unable to hear. (For more detailed
information on the new Naída processor, please visit http://cochlearimplantonline.com/site/harmony-vs-naida-ci-q70-advanced-bionics-recipients-share-their-experiences-in-upgrading-to-naida-ci-q70/.)

Unfortunately, many insurance providers (including
Kaiser, which carries ours) are not willing to fund new durable medical equipment
as long as the current equipment is not totally obsolete. They do not consider any of the aforementioned
improvements to be medically necessary.
We disagree, but we cannot fight them on this. Therefore, we are turning to you: our family,
our friends, and anyone else who feels called to donate. Each of the new
processors will cost $9,600. We have set
a goal of raising $20,000. That would
cover two processors and the fees for this crowd funding website. In the event that we exceed our goal, we will
either put the money toward extra batteries for the first two processors, or toward
back-up processors.

We thank you for your time in reading this, and for
any donation that you make. We would also appreciate it if you would share this
page with others, whether you have donated or not.

With love and blessings,

The Savages
