Menifee Police Capt. Chris Karrer said an investigation into the fatality showed the victim crossed the highway in an area posted as "No Pedestrian Crossing" with no marked crosswalk.
The sedan driver who hit the woman was traveling at "an unknown speed" and suddenly spotted Luxhilario in his path, at which point Karrer said the driver "attempted to swerve, but he was unable to avoid striking the pedestrian."
