MURRIETA, CA — Murrieta City Council has cleared the way for a vacant 8-acre property situated at the southeast corner of Date and Delhaven streets to become the future site of a 234-unit apartment complex.

In a 5-0 vote Tuesday, the council approved a development plan and zoning change (from commercial to multi-family) that allow construction of eight buildings containing a total of 234 units — 12 of them categorized as very low income.

The project site is located near the busy Murrieta Hot Springs and Winchester roads intersection. Once built and occupied, traffic from the apartments would have "significant unavoidable impacts" on Murrieta Hot Springs Road, between Margarita Avenue and Winchester Road, according to city documents.

However, city staff told council members Tuesday that if the site had been developed as commercial, it would have resulted in more traffic than the proposed project.
