3 Major Freeway Shutdowns This Weekend For Southwest RivCo Commuters

Interstates 15 and 215 in Murrieta and Temecula, as well as eastbound state Route 91 in Corona, have scheduled closures this weekend.

SOUTHWEST RIVERSIDE COUNTY, CA — Motorists planning to use Interstates 15 or 215, or eastbound state Route 91, this weekend should plan ahead because traffic won't be pleasant: Shutdowns of all three major corridors are scheduled.

The eastbound 91 Freeway will close in downtown Corona to enable crews to continue re-surfacing work. The full eastbound closure is slated to start at 10 p.m. Friday between Lincoln Avenue and Main Street, with all lanes out of service until 5 a.m. Monday, according to the Riverside County Transportation Commission.

"This weekend’s closure will have a greater impact on traffic than the two previous closures on eastbound 91 in Corona last month. Lengthy travel delays on eastbound 91 are expected between the 241 toll road (in Orange County) and Interstate 15 in Corona," according to an agency statement.

In addition to the freeway closure, the eastbound 91 onramps at Auto Center Drive/Serfas Club Drive, Maple Street, and Lincoln Avenue will be closed.

Drivers headed east from Orange and Los Angeles counties are strongly advised to steer clear of the 91 by using northbound 57 or northbound 71 to connect to eastbound 60.

Southwest Riverside County motorists returning home from those counties can also use the Ortega Highway/state Route 74.

Westbound 91 traffic won't be pretty either. Due to detours that will be in place for the shutdown, traffic delays are likely on westbound 91 heading into Corona from the Riverside area or from any of the arteries in the area. Westbound 91 Express Lanes will be closed this weekend in Orange County, which may further impact travel to the west, according to the RCTC.

Closer to home in Southwest Riverside County, the second phase of a construction project designed to reduce traffic congestion and improve motorist safety near the Interstate 15/Interstate 215 junction is kicking off this weekend with overnight shutdowns of both freeways from 10 p.m. Sunday until 5:30 a.m. Monday.

The full closure affects all southbound I-15 and I-215 lanes at Murrieta Hot Springs Road and all northbound I-15 lanes at Winchester Road, the city of Temecula reported.

Detours will be available on Jefferson Avenue, Ynez Road, and Jackson Avenue, according to the city.

The closures are needed to prepare for phase 2 construction of the I-15 French Valley Parkway Interchange Improvement project. Read more here about the construction work and this weekend's I-15/I-215 shutdowns.
