MURRIETA, CA — The filming of a short skit at a Murrieta park last week drew no laughs from local police or parents.
On Friday, the Murrieta Police Department announced on social media that its officers were at Sykes Ranch Park near Thompson Middle School in response to a man with a gun.
The school at 24040 Hayes Avenue was placed on lockdown out of an abundance of caution, and a message was sent to parents advising of the closure.
However, as police investigated, it was determined that people were at the park filming a short skit involving fake firearms. Officers reprimanded those involved, but no charges were filed.
Dozens of residents commented on Murrieta PD's social media post.
"I will say that as a parent and hearing other parents' stories from their kids trickling in, these adults with no accountability with fake weapons should be held responsible to apologize to the students publicly," one person wrote.
Another post read, "Getting the call from my kids and rushing to my house to make sure all was ok. It def triggered my PTSD."
Many commenters thanked Murrieta police officers for their quick response at the scene. Another summed it up, "Common sense is a terrible thing to waste."
