McCowan and his 28-year-old son were both out riding near Idyllwild.

Carlos was riding a 2014 Honda TRX450R alongside his son, who was riding a dirt bike. Later, it was reported missing after McCowan did not return to his truck at the end of the day.

A helicopter, CHP officers and deputies were requested to assist in locating him.

The elder McCowan was found "hunched over the quad" wearing his helmet and road-safety clothing, with no damage to the quad and no "obvious crash injuries," according to the CHP.

The cause of his death was under investigation by the Riverside County coroner's office.
