MURRIETA, CA — A DUI checkpoint will be staged at an undisclosed location in Murrieta Friday night, police said.
Motorists will be screened for signs of impaired driving during the DUI checkpoint operation conducted from 7 p.m. Saturday to 12 a.m. midnight, according to the Murrieta Police Department.
Murrieta police said checkpoint locations are chosen based on the history of DUI crashes and arrests in the city. The primary purpose of the checkpoints is to promote public safety by deterring impaired driving.
Murrieta police said impaired driving is not just from alcohol and can include some prescriptions, and over-the-counter drugs that may interfere with driving.
Drivers charged with DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license.
Funding for the DUI checkpoint is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
