📰 News we're reading

1. Traffic Stop Leads to DUI Arrest, Narcotics and Weapon Seizure (crimevoice.com) — Murrieta police recently stopped a driver for a vehicle code violation and ended up arresting them on suspicion of DUI, drug possession, and a weapons offense. Officers say they found methamphetamine, fentanyl, paraphernalia, and brass knuckles during a vehicle search. The driver was booked into jail on multiple charges tied to the incident in Murrieta.

2. California brewery abruptly closes down after 12-year run (nypost.com) — Electric Brewing Company in Murrieta has suddenly closed after 12 years, following a rapid, unexpected end to a potential sale. Owners say another brewery will take over the space while they keep their name and recipes and consider a future reopening. They're asking fans not to take souvenirs from the taproom, but instead to share memories of the community they built.

3. Family awarded $13.5M in Riverside County jail fentanyl death (amedpost.com) — A federal jury has awarded $13.5 million in damages, with about $5.4 million ultimately payable, to the family of a man who died of a fentanyl overdose while in custody at Murrieta's Cois Byrd Detention Center. Jurors found Riverside County and the Sheriff's Department partly liable, and the family's attorneys say the verdict underscores the need for stronger jail oversight and inmate protections.

4. Bill seeks to bar sex offenders from public office. Some argue it's too narrow (fresnobee.com) — A new California bill to permanently bar certain convicted sex offenders and human traffickers from holding public office is headed to Gov. Newsom, and Murrieta's state senator Kelly Seyarto backed it despite concerns it doesn't go far enough. Lawmakers debated which crimes should trigger a lifetime ban, ultimately tying it to offenses requiring lifetime sex-offender registration.
