MURRIETA, CA — A Murrieta Fire & Rescue member has earned a high honor that has been bestowed on fewer than 2,400 fire professionals worldwide.
Battalion Chief Eric Ackerman has earned the internationally recognized Chief Fire Officer designation from the Commission on Professional Credentialing, city officials announced Thursday.
Ackerman is one of just 2,390 fire service professionals worldwide to hold the credential, which recognizes leadership, professional achievements, and technical competence.
The voluntary credentialing process evaluates candidates across seven key areas: experience, education, professional development, industry contributions, association memberships, community involvement, and technical skills. Candidates must also pass a peer review process and commit to a long-term professional development plan.
"The effort he has put into becoming designated as a Chief Fire Officer demonstrates that he has been measured against the highest standards for a chief officer in the fire service, and he has proven he exceeds those standards," Murrieta Fire Chief Bernard Molloy said.
The designation builds on Ackerman's prior professional credentials, including Fire Officer status in 2017 and Chief Training Officer status in 2019.
"I believe leadership comes with a responsibility to continually learn, grow, and challenge ourselves to be better," Ackerman said. "I'm honored to receive this designation and grateful for the exceptional people I've worked alongside."
The Chief Fire Officer designation is valid for three years, during which designees must maintain active industry involvement, ongoing education, and adherence to professional conduct codes.
The credentialing body operates as part of the Center for Public Safety Excellence, a nonprofit organization representing fire, emergency medical services, academic, and government leaders.
