Anyone Lose a Tortoise? Titanic Terrapin Found Near Hemet

Anyone with information about where it might have come from was asked to call the shelter at (951) 791-3720.

A 200-pound tortoise apparently kept as a pet was found lumbering along a Riverside County roadway and is now waiting to be claimed at a county animal shelter, authorities said Thursday.

The wayward terrapin was picked up by an animal control officer after it was spotted Wednesday night on Sage Road, southeast of Hemet, according to Department of Animal Services spokesman John Welsh.

He said the reptile appeared to be in good shape and was placed in a pen at the San Jacinto Animal Campus.
