Just Good Kids—Part 1

Spotlighting young people who are making good choices day to day.

There is so much going on out there with kids doing things that are horrific or outlandish that it makes one wonder—what about the ones who are doing good?  Why don't we hear about them? So I came up with the idea to feature a handful of young people in a series of spotlights so to speak, so that the community can see we do have good kids and that the kids can see good acts will be recognized too.

I am starting with my oldest daughter. I figured I would start at home because it was easy and most of all comfortable (for me).

Kristin is a freshman at Murrieta Mesa High School. She has made honor roll, attends early morning Seminary (like Christian Bible Study) and is in her second production at her school. When she is in production she has 12-hour days. This leaves little time for socializing. Mostly her life consists of school, homework, rehearsal, and sleep. But just like the many other drama students under Mr. Ryan's direction, she is completely dedicated to this art. Kristin was fortunate enough to have Mr. Ryan as her Drama teacher at Shivela Middle School in the sixth grade. It was there she gained her first real taste for drama. She also earned a great respect for Mr. Ryan.

"He tells us to never give up, no matter what. And to never let other people bring us down," she said. She went on to say that he can make a bad day seem good by bringing humor into it.

Kristin talked about other adults in her life who have made an impact on her. One such person was Iris Carter. She was well known within our church, and Kristin was deeply saddened by her passing.

"She taught me to love everyone no matter what," she said, about Iris.

She continued that her father has taught that it's OK to be silly and have fun.

What did I teach her? "To believe in yourself."

Kristin dreams to one day be a famous actress. How is she going to do this?  School and lots of study is her answer. She has plans to go to a college that has a tremendous theatre department and program. She told me it is important to study and keep good grades. She also holds a high moral standard for herself. She is opposed to swearing, drinking, smoking and any kind of drug use. She believes in keeping the body healthy and strong. She believes in God and believes in daily prayer as part of that moral standard. Kristin's friends all know this about her and respect it. This speaks volumes about her friends too.

I am excited to bring more young people to the Patch!
