Calvary Murrieta Puts The 'Student' In Student-Athlete
The Warriors girls volleyball team won the CIF-Southern Section Team Academic Award.

Calvary Murrieta High School’s girls volleyball team has won the 2011 CIF-Southern Section Team Academic Award for schools with an enrollment of 1,500 or less with a stellar 3.928 grade-point average.
Team winners in each sport will be honored in a pregame ceremony May 9 at Angels Stadium before the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim play the Chicago White Sox.
Nearly 1,500 schools in the CIF-Southern Section put in entries, with teams being awarded on the base of its cumulative grade point average in 22 sports. To be considered, a team needed a minimum 3.0 GPA average (on a 4.0 scale) in college-prep classes in the first semester of the 2010-2011 school year.

The highest team GPA in each sport determined the winner. Schools are divided into two enrollment categories: enrollment of 1,500 or more and enrollment of less than 1,500.
“They’re a great group of girls. I wasn’t surprised at all,” Warriors coach Paul Amoy said. “As athletes, they always worked super hard, so I figured they’d be doing great in the classroom too.

“I know they would be studying before practice, after practice and on the way to tournaments and matches. This group especially really knew how to prioritize. They’re all really sharp kids so I don’t think it was too difficult for them.”
During the season, Calvary Murrieta won the Ambassador League for ninth consecutive time, but lost in the quarterfinals of the CIF 3A playoffs.
Each first place teams receive a banner to commemorate their achievement, while all teams who participate receive Academic Award certificates for their student athletes.
Each CIF-SS member school is entitled to name a male and a female “Student-Athlete of the Year” as well. Recipients of the individual awards must be seniors that have maintained at least a 3.5 GPA (4.0 scale) in college-prep courses over the past three years, in addition to earning a letter in at least one varsity sport and participating in extracurricular activities (music, drama, service groups, etc.).
