MENIFEE, CA — A car crashed into a house in a Menifee neighborhood Wednesday, triggering a gas leak that prompted precautionary evacuations.

The crash was reported about 11:15 a.m. in the 26000 block of Berkey Court, near Sun City Boulevard, according to Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department.

The agency said that multiple engine crews were sent to the location and found the vehicle into the structure, where a natural gas main was ruptured due to the impact.

One person was inside the residence at the time of the crash but was not injured, nor was the motorist, according to officials.

The property and surrounding houses were evacuated as a precaution because of the gas leak.

SoCal Gas Co. technicians were summoned and began making repairs an hour later. However, as of 2:45 p.m., the crews were still working to secure the line.

Menifee police were investigating to determine the cause of the crash.
