DUI Checkpoint Planned Friday In Murrieta: What To Know
Friday, drivers should be aware that police will be out in force checking for intoxicated drivers.
MURRIETA, CA — The Murrieta Police Department will conduct a DUI Checkpoint on Friday, August 21st, starting at 7 p.m., the department shared.
The checkpoint will be within the City of Murrieta; however, the exact location has not been released.
"Checkpoint locations are chosen based on data showing where impaired driving-related crashes occur most often," Sgt. Matt Schmidt shared. "The goal is simple: keep our roads safe by taking suspected impaired drivers off the streets before they can hurt themselves or others."
Remember, impairment isn't just about alcohol. While medicinal and recreational marijuana are legal in California, driving under its influence is not.
"Certain prescription and over-the-counter medications can affect your ability to drive safely," Schmidt says.
The cost of a first-time DUI adds up fast — an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, plus a suspended license.
"Don't risk it," he advises. "Plan ahead. Designate a sober driver, use a rideshare, or call a friend.
Funding for this checkpoint was provided by a grant from the California Highway Patrol Cannabis Tax Fund Grant Program.
