RIVERSIDE, CA — A motorist killed last week on southbound Interstate 215 in Riverside was identified over the weekend as a 66-year-old Pomona man.

Phillip Macias was fatally injured just after 5 a.m. Friday on the freeway, just north of Central Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Macias was driving a pickup truck when, for unknown reasons, he slammed into the back of a tractor-trailer.

Macias was traveling at an unconfirmed speed in the slow lane when his 2010 Ford Ranger approached the slower-moving big rig and crashed into it, according to CHP Officer Javier Navarro.

Macias was pronounced dead at the scene. The big-rig driver was unhurt, according to the CHP report.

The CHP asked anyone with information relevant to the investigation to contact the agency's Riverside office at 951-324-7210.
