Menifee Dad Faces Future Criminal Liability After Teen Son Seriously Injured In E-Moto Crash
If the teen is caught illegally riding an off-highway e-motorcycle again, the father could face criminal charges for child endangerment.
MENIFEE, CA — A 15-year-old boy illegally riding an off-highway electric motorcycle was severely injured last week after colliding with a car in Menifee, resulting in a citation for his father and a stern warning from police regarding parental responsibility for minors operating unpermitted vehicles on public streets.
The crash occurred around 4:14 p.m. Thursday at the intersection of McCall Boulevard and Summit Street. According to the Menifee Police Department, the teenager was riding a Talaria e-moto on the sidewalk along McCall Boulevard when he collided with a 2012 Chevrolet Malibu turning right onto Summit Street.
The Menifee teen suffered a severe leg injury and was treated at the scene by American Medical Response paramedics before being transported to a local hospital, where he was listed in stable condition. While the juvenile was wearing a helmet, police noted it was not Department of Transportation (D.O.T.) certified.
Investigators emphasized that the teenager was riding an off-highway e-motorcycle, which is illegal to operate on public roadways or sidewalks. Officers issued the youth a citation for driving without a license and impounded the vehicle.
Police also held the teenager's father directly accountable, citing him for knowingly allowing his child to operate a motor vehicle without a valid license. Authorities served the father with an official advisory, warning that if his child is caught riding an illegal off-highway e-motorcycle again or is involved in a future crash, the father could face criminal charges for child endangerment.
The driver of the Chevrolet, a 64-year-old Menifee woman, and her two passengers were uninjured. She remained at the scene, cooperated with investigators, and was issued a citation for driving with an expired license.
Drugs and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the collision, police said.
The identities of the involved parties were not released.
