Menifee Leaders Ask Residents To Design City's Municipal Flag

MENIFEE, CA — Menifee students, artists and residents of any background who have ideas about what designs should go into the municipal flag are being asked to submit them between now and Nov. 19.

The Menifee City Council is seeking a wide variety of input, and the "City Flag Design Contest" was initiated to spark interest and promote competition.

"The city of Menifee, like many other communities, is coming out of a tough time, and we are growing fast," said Councilman Bob Karwin, who first proposed the contest. "This contest gives people a unique opportunity to help shape the city's identity, including representing its vitality and resiliency."

Entries are being sought from K-6th grade students, seventh- and eighth-graders, all high schoolers, as well as university students and anyone else who resides locally, according to officials.

Only one entry per person is permitted.

Categories have been established to make the submission process easier.

"The contest will be judged based on five main principles: keep it simple, use meaningful symbols, use only two or three basic colors, no lettering or seals, and be distinctive or related," according to a city statement.

Proposals will be vetted, and the ones with the highest potential will be submitted to the community for a vote during the city's annual Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony on Dec. 4 at Mt. San Jacinto College's satellite campus on La Piedra Road. Voting will also be open via an online portal that will be announced later, officials said.

The contest bears similarities to a contest in San Jacinto two years ago that focused on designs for a new city seal.
