Murrieta: Field Saluting American Servicemen And Women Opens Sat.
The 11th annual Field of Honor opened at 9:45 a.m. Saturday, ahead of Veterans Day.
MURRIETA, CA — More than 2,000 American flags bearing the names of men and women who served, or are serving, in the U.S. military will be arrayed in Murrieta's Town Square Park Saturday, marking the start of a weeklong series of events intended to honor veterans.
The 11th annual "Field of Honor," provided by the Murrieta Rotary Club, will open at 9:45 a.m. and remain available for visitors to experience until Nov. 16.
"Everyone has the opportunity to honor a veteran, those currently serving or for past service, loved ones, or personal heroes, by flying a flag in the Field of Honor," event coordinator Jann Gentry said. "Each purchased flag will be tagged with the name and rank, service or other designation."
The 2,019 3-by-5 foot Stars & Stripes are sponsored by a variety of individuals and organizations. Over the seven-day period during which the flags wave, anyone is welcome to walk among them and observe related activities occurring on the perimeter of the field.
There will be a ceremony recognizing the U.S. Marine Corps' 244th birthday, patriotic chalk art displays and a Boy Scouts flag salute.
The city's 17th annual Veterans Day Parade is scheduled at 10 a.m. Monday, beginning at Ivy Street and Washington Avenue, rolling through the historic downtown area, concluding about three hours later at the Field of Honor.
Representatives from all service branches, marching bands, military vehicles, city and county officials, public safety personnel, vintage automobiles and other attractions will be part of the procession. A flyover by historic warbirds is also planned.
The flags will be taken down on Nov. 16 and 17, according to the rotary club.
