Murrieta Police Announce DUI Checkpoint
Murrieta police say they've investigated 209 DUI-related crashes in the last three years alone.
MURRIETA, CA — Murrieta police are planning to hold a DUI/driver's license checkpoint in town this weekend, the agency announced Thursday. The operation is planned for Saturday night beginning at 7 p.m. and will last approximately seven hours.
Police do not disclose the exact location of such operations ahead of time.
Police said they will be looking for those who appear to be under the influence of alcohol while behind the wheel — as well as those who may be impaired by prescription drugs or marijuana. They'll also be checking that drivers are properly licensed.
"Over the course of the past three years The Murrieta Police Department officers have investigated 209 DUI collisions which have claimed 4 lives and resulted in another 72 injuries," police said.
So, why publicize the operation?
"The deterrent effect of High Visibility Enforcement using both DUI checkpoints and DUI Saturation Patrols has proven to lower the number of persons killed and injured in alcohol or drug impaired crashes," police said in their news release. "Research shows that crashes involving an impaired driver can be reduced by up to 20 percent when well-publicized proactive DUI operations are conducted routinely."
Funding for the operation comes from state and federal grants.
