REAL-TIME RESULTS: Will Stone Maintain Early Lead Over Garcia in State Senate Race?

Riverside County Supervisor Jeff Stone took an early lead against former Assemblywoman Bonnie Garcia Tuesday night in the hotly contested race for the vacant 28th state Senate District seat.

The district includes the Coachella and Temecula valleys. See map below for boundaries.

Initial returns showed Stone ahead of Garcia by a six-point margin.

The race between the two Republicans has been highly charged, with both candidates swinging away with attack ads and relentless campaigning. Stone contended that most of Garcia’s funding has come from outside the district, while Garcia’s supporters have run commercials re-creating an angry street confrontation between Stone and another motorist last year during which Stone allegedly flashed a badge, representing himself as law enforcement officer.

Here’s a tentative schedule for ballot results on Election Night and beyond:

  • Polls close Tuesday at 8 p.m.
  • Approximately 8:30 p.m., vote-by-mail results will be released.
  • Approximately 9 p.m. early voting results will be released. This will result only in minimal change to vote totals.
  • Approximately 10 p.m., first polling place results will be released as workers continue transporting ballots from around the county to Riverside for counting. This update will include polling place ballots arriving to the registrar’s office for tabulation prior to 9:30 p.m.
  • Hourly polling place results will be updated until 1 a.m.
  • After 1 a.m. updated polling place results will be released every 90 minutes.
  • Depending on voter turnout, polling place ballot counts will likely continue until 5 a.m. on Wednesday.
