Sign-Ups Underway for Murrieta's New American Youth Football League
A youth football league that is affiliated with the National Football League is starting up in Murrieta.
Come August, the Murrieta Panthers will officially start its first season under the American Youth Football Organization.
The league is being brought to Murrieta by Todd Cassidy, a former Pop Warner parent and coach who says there is a lot to be excited about. The Murrieta Panthers is part of the Riverside County Youth Football & Cheer Conference, and will play teams such as the French Valley Chargers, Menifee Patriots, Hemet Saints and Riverside Ravens.
"These are all the players they will be playing against in high school," Cassidy said.

Players are grouped by weight and age--versus grade level--and the league adheres to the National Federation of State High School Associations Rule Book. Cassidy said there are other unique aspects to the league.
For instance, there is a Tiny Might category for players 7 and 8 years old who are just starting out playing tackle. Because they will be playing against others with the same skill level, Cassidy said it guards against injuries.

Additionally, American Youth Football has a program that enforces helping youth development life skills.
"We will hold players accountable weekly," Cassidy said, adding that the goal is to work directly with teachers, assisting in tutoring arrangements if necessary.
The league is for youth ages 5-15. About 30 players have already signed up, according to Cassidy. Registration is open online, or visit the Murrieta Panthers' booth from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 12 during the Tour de Murrieta.
Sign-ups will also be taken March 19 at the Murrieta Pony Little League fields on 6th Street in Murrieta. An additional date is being planned for April.
Registration fees are $175 for flag, $275 for tackle and $375 for cheer. Scholarship money is available through the league on a case-by-case basis. For more information, visit Murrietapanthers.org or call Cassidy at 951-440-9208.
