The driver, who hit the 66-year-old female in Hemet, told officials he did not see her "until it was too late," authorities said.

HEMET, CA — A 66-year-old Perris woman riding a three-wheeled, mobility scooter was struck by a vehicle and killed Tuesday night in Hemet, according to law enforcement.

The female, who was not identified pending notification of kin, was in the eastbound traffic lane of Menlo Avenue, near Glen Way, shortly after 10 p.m. when she was hit by an eastbound, 1997 Honda Civic driven by a Hemet man, 36, the Hemet Police Department said.

"The man did not see the pedestrian until it was too late, and a collision occurred," the department said, adding that the scooter had no illumination lights. "It is not clear why the pedestrian was in the roadway, and the investigation is ongoing."
