Angie Bustos of American Canyon High School won the recent student speak-off and will speak at the 2016 TEDxNapaValley on Sunday May 1.

Angie Bustos of American Canyon High School has won the 2016 TEDxNapaValley Student Speak-Off and secured the final speaker spot at this year’s TEDxNapaValley event on Sunday, May 1. The March 16 Student Speak-Off at the Napa High School Little Theater featured ten students from American Canyon High School, Calistoga Junior-Senior High School, Napa High School, New Technology High School, and Sonoma Valley High School presenting three-to-six-minute multi-media talks centered on this year’s TEDxNapaValley theme, “Go Figure!

TheTEDxNapaValley organizing team selected the final winner, who will go on to perform at the main TEDxNapaValley conference May 1, 2016 at the Napa Valley College Performing Arts Center. The talks were judged on the students’ elocution and style, their ability to immediately grab the audience in the introduction, use of digital media to enhance their presentation, the general crafting of their talk and completion within the specified three- to six-minute time frame. Angie Bustos presented a powerful talk about the pervasiveness of rape, the importance of understanding its impact and how to prevent it.

“I chose to talk about rape because it impacts so many people, including children, and it is important for everyone to understand how common and very unacceptable that is,” said 18-year-old Bustos.
