Chanel Luxe Brand Digs Into Napa Valley As Wine Dynasty Pivots

An iconic Oakville winery changes hands amid industry shift.

NAPA VALLEY, CA — A defining moment in Napa Valley winemaking happened this week as Chanel acquired the storied Rudd Estate, ending a family-run legacy that helped shape the region's reputation.

The purchase, finalized April 13, places the Oakville property under the umbrella of St. Supéry Estate Vineyards & Winery, Chanel’s U.S. wine brand led by CEO Emma Swain.

Financial terms were not disclosed. The Oakville estate adds to a footprint that includes 1,700 acres across Napa Valley, with 620 acres under vine. The winery remains one of the few in the region producing 100% estate-grown wines and is widely known for its sauvignon blanc and cabernet sauvignon.

The move marks the next chapter for the estate founded by Leslie and Susan Rudd in 1996.

For three decades, the Rudd family shaped the property into one of Napa Valley’s most distinctive wine estates.

Swain said the Oakville vineyard represents a rare expression of Napa Valley terroir and fits with Chanel’s global philosophy of cultivating legacy estates including prestigious wineries across Bordeaux and southern France.

Chanel entered the U.S. wine industry in 2015 with its purchase of St. Supéry and has since expanded its holdings internationally.

Chanel and St. Supéry "share a deep commitment to estate wines, craftsmanship, sustainability, and excellence. This commitment extends beyond Napa Valley to the wineries owned by Chanel in Margaux, Saint-Émilion, and Porquerolles,” Swain said in an announcement on the company’s website.

“It’s exciting to see the Rudd family’s legacy continue with a partner who values those things so deeply.”

Industry observers say the sale is part of a broader shift as legacy family wineries face rising costs, generational transitions, and competition from global luxury brands and investment firms.

Companies such as Blackstone and Moët Hennessy Louis Vuiton have increased their presence in premium wine regions, reshaping ownership patterns.

The changes do not lessen the uneasiness that such moves leave on the people who live and work in wine country, even one as monied and dynamic as Napa Valley.

More narrowly, the move also expands the French luxury conglomerate's holdings in Napa Valley. In 2023, Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton acquired Joseph Phelps Vineyards, a leading Napa Valley winery. The purchase marked the fourth Napa winery for LVMH, which also owns Domaine Chandon, Newton Vineyard, and a majority stake in Colgin Cellars. Terms of the deal were not disclosed in that buyout.

Rudd's holdings included Vintage Wine Estates, specialty grocer Dean & DeLuca, the Oakville Grocery, and a distillery.

Samantha Rudd sold several related assets in recent years, including Oakville Grocery and Edge Hill Winery, and will now concentrate on hospitality ventures such as the Michelin-starred Press restaurant, according to reports.

Meanwhile, Swain said the newly acquired Oakville estate will soon open to visitors by appointment, with St. Supéry planning exclusive wine allocations tied to the historic property.
