Baby Owl Siblings Make Wild Day For Teacher, Sheriff

NAPA VALLEY, CA — A routine afternoon turned into a wild day when a P.E. teacher spotted two young great horned owls pressed together in the brush near a school’s eucalyptus grove.

The American Canyon Middle School instructor found the birds near the campus Eucalyptus grove on April 24. The birds stayed alert, but refused to separate or move, prompting a call for help.

A Napa County Sheriff's deputy arrived with wildlife photography equipment, assessed the scene, and checked for visible injuries. The deputy then contacted Napa County Sheriff’s Animal Control, which called in Napa Wildlife Rescue staff.

Wildlife rescue staff collected the owls—identified as siblings roughly six to eight weeks old. Veterinarians are examining the birds for possible injuries and health conditions.

Updates on the owls’ condition are expected as the birds are assessed.
