Vallejo School Engulfed In Massive Overnight Blaze

A former Vallejo elementary school that closed nearly four decades ago caught fire early Saturday morning.

VALLEJO, CA — A fire ripped through a former elementary school in Vallejo early Saturday morning that was closed nearly 40 years ago.

About 40 Vallejo firefighters responded to the fire at the Grant School at 740 Fifth St. at about 1:24 a.m., according to Vallejo Fire Department spokesperson Capt. Kevin Brown.

The school was closed in 1989, according to the California Department of Education. The city of Vallejo explored purchasing the shuttered site from the Vallejo Unified School District in 2023 and possibly turning it into a fire station, according to city council records.

Firefighters from the Benicia Fire Department, Crockett-Carquinez Fire Protection District, and American Canyon Fire Protection District assisted with the response.

The fire was brought under control overnight, Brown said.

Heavy equipment from the city's Public Works Department was needed to uncover smoldering pockets of the damaged building, he said.

There were no injuries as of about 9 a.m.

The cause was unknown at that time.
