NAPA VALLEY, CA —A Napa family's love for a daughter who lived with developmental disabilities has created a new grant fund offering nonprofits up to $50,000 to support residents with similar needs.
Napa Valley Community Foundation announced Tuesday the first grant cycle for the William A. and Theresa N. Boughn Fund, which the Boughn family established through a bequest in honor of their daughter, Melissa Ann Boughn.
Melissa lived with developmental disabilities and spent nearly four decades as a resident of Vine Village.
Her family entrusted the foundation with supporting charitable organizations that provide residential care, assistance, and related services to people with developmental disabilities in Napa County.
"This Fund exists because one family chose to turn their love for their daughter into something lasting for the whole community," said Julia DeNatale, chief impact officer at Napa Valley Community Foundation.
"Our job now is to honor that trust by investing in the local organizations that support our neighbors with developmental disabilities."
Nonprofits have until Sept. 30 to submit proposals.
Organizations with annual operating budgets of at least $1 million may request up to $50,000, while organizations with budgets below $1 million may request up to $25,000. Requests cannot exceed 20% of an organization's total annual operating budget.
The foundation will consider requests for unrestricted general operating support as well as proposals for specific programs.
"We believe that people with developmental disabilities enrich our community through their relationships, perspectives, talents, and contributions," DeNatale said. "A truly inclusive Napa County is one in which people of all abilities have opportunities not only to receive support, but to participate, contribute, belong, and thrive."
Eligible services include residential care, supportive services, community-based or therapeutic services, independent living or employment supports, family supports, recreation, and transportation, among others.
An ad hoc advisory committee with expertise in developmental disabilities will help inform grant recommendations, which NVCF's Community Programs & Grants Committee will approve.
The foundation will communicate funding decisions by Nov. 14.
Eligible applicants must be a 501(c)(3) public charity, have a qualified 501(c)(3) fiscal sponsor, or be a public agency or governmental entity under Internal Revenue Code Section 170(c)(1). Applicants must serve Napa County residents with developmental disabilities within the county.
