NAPA COUNTY, CA — Firefighters plan to burn up to 90 acres of grass and oak woodland east of Napa on today and Friday, potentially sending smoke into Napa and Solano counties.
Cal Fire's Sonoma-Lake-Napa Unit scheduled the two-day prescribed burn in the Wild Horse Valley Community near the Napa-Solano county border.
Cal Fire and Napa County Fire Department firefighters will conduct the operation.
Residents in both counties may see smoke between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., according to Cal Fire.
The site sits atop a ridge above a larger population on Napa's eastern side. Wildfires affected the area in 2008 and 2017. The project will build on a wildfire mitigation burn on June 22.
Cal Fire is coordinating the project in compliance with Bay Area Air District requirements.
Prescribed burns must meet strict criteria for ecological benefit, weather conditions, smoke management, and fire safety. Changes in those conditions could prompt last-minute changes to the operation.
Wildland firefighters will monitor conditions, fire behavior, and designated fire control lines throughout the burn. If conditions do not support burning, crews will reschedule the operation.
