Police are still investigating her death. Such an investigation is routine in such an unroutine event. As detectives continued interviewing witnesses, searching for evidence, and canvassing the surrounding neighborhood, a GoFundMe campaign launched by family, friends, and coworkers painted a portrait of a child relatives described as “sweet, sassy, and full of life.”

They said Elaina had celebrated her first birthday just last month and brought energy into every room shde entered. Family members remembered the toddler cheering at her brothers’ sporting events, blowing kisses at relatives, and carrying around her beloved stuffed bear, or “osito.”

“She was not just loved — she completed the Rodriguez family,” they said.

Elaina left behind her parents, Wendy and Jose Rodriguez, and two older brothers.

Organizers of the fundraiser said both parents were at work when the child died and now face funeral costs, time away from work, and the burden of supporting their sons while grieving.

By Wednesday morning, donations had climbed to nearly $45,000 as supporters posted messages of prayer, heartbreak, and solidarity with the family.
