Calistoga Man Dies In Suspected DUI Crash On Highway 128

CHP responded to the crash at Spencer Lane at about 12:15 a.m. Wednesday.

NORTH BAY, CA — A 26-year-old Calistoga man died following a suspected DUI crash early this morning on state Highway 128. The solo-vehicle crash was reported at about 12:15 a.m. Wednesday on SR-128 at Spencer Lane in unincorporated Sonoma County, CHP Officer David deRutte said.

Officers arrived on scene to find a 1991 Acura TL had traveled off the south edge of the roadway and collided with a tree and a power pole, deRutte said.

When officers found that no one was inside the wrecked car, they checked the surrounding areas and contacted local hospitals.

"Later it was discovered that a male subject had been checked into St. Helena Hospital," deRutte said. "The male subject was taken to the hospital by a friend whom he called immediately after the collision."

Officers responded to the hospital and subsequently placed the man under arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.

Preliminary investigation indicated the Acura had been traveling eastbound when it went off the roadway.

The driver, suffering severe injuries, was airlifted to UC Davis Medical Center where he later died, deRutte said.

CHP officials determined the driver was a 26-year-old resident of Calistoga but were withholding his identity until his family members are properly notified.

Anyone with information about the crash was asked to call the Santa Rosa CHP office at 707-588-1400.
