Calistoga Nearly Breaks Heat Record As Bay Area Hit With Triple-Digit Temps

NAPA COUNTY, CA -- As Calistoga residents already know, the weather indeed was very hot this past weekend -- hot enough to tie a high temperature record set almost a decade ago. With the weekend's triple-digit temperatures putting much of the San Francisco Bay Area under excessive heat warnings and advisories, the National Weather Service reported several record- and near-record breaking temperatures, including in Calistoga on Sunday, where the high of 103 degrees tied with a record set on Aug. 26, 2008.

At 106 degrees, Healdsburg was the hottest spot Sunday in the North Bay, the NWS said. Elsewhere in the Bay Area, the East Bay's hottest spot Sunday was Livermore (107 degrees); on the Peninsula, it was Redwood City (90 degrees); and in the South Bay, it was Gilroy (102 degrees).

Here are the Bay Area heat records set or tied over the weekend, according to the NWS:

• Gilroy, Santa Clara County: Sunday, 102 degrees, tied record set on Aug. 27, 1988
• Calistoga, Napa County: Sunday, 103 degrees, tied record set on Aug. 27, 2008
• San Rafael, Marin County: Sunday, 100 degrees, broke previous record of 99 degrees set on Aug. 27, 2008
• San Rafael, Marin County: Saturday, 99 degrees, broke previous record of 95 degrees set on Aug. 26, 2008
• Healdsburg, Sonoma County: Saturday, 105 degrees, tied with record set on Aug. 26, 1944
• Santa Rosa, Sonoma County: Saturday, 102 degrees, broke previous record of 100 degrees set on Aug. 26, 2008
• Livermore, Alameda County: Saturday, 105 degrees, tied record set on Aug. 26, 1944
• Oakland Airport: Saturday, 84 degrees, tied record set on Aug. 26, 1963

The hot weather continues Monday, with National Weather Service excessive heat warnings in effect through 9 p.m. for:

-- North Bay mountains, East Bay interior valleys, Santa Cruz Mountains, where high temperatures 95 to 108 degrees can be expected;

-- Santa Lucia Mountains and Los Padres National Forest, the East Bay Hills and Diablo Range, the mountains of San Benito County and interior Monterey County including Pinnacles National Park, and the southern Salinas Valley, where high temperatures of 98 to 112 degrees can be expected; and

-- The Sacramento Valley, the Carquinez Strait and Delta, the Northern San Joaquin Valley and Clear Lake/Southern Lake County, where high temperatures will range from 100 to 110 degrees.
National Weather Service heat advisories remain in effect through 9 p.m. Monday for:

-- The San Francisco Bay Shoreline, where highs of 85 to 95 degrees can be expected; and

-- North Bay interior valleys, Santa Clara Valley, Northern Salinas Valley, Hollister Valley and Carmel Valley, where highs of 95 to 105 are forecast.

And now for the good news: the NWS says cooler temperatures will begin to arrive in the region Tuesday.
