American Canyon Hit-And-Run Driver Turns Self In, Police Say

A pedestrian suffered major injuries when he was hit by a car at the intersection of state Highway 29 and Rio Del Mar, police said.

AMERICAN CANYON, CA — UPDATED: A driver accused in a hit-and-run collision with a pedestrian that left an American Canyon man with major injuries turned herself in Thursday, American Canyon police said.

ORIGINAL STORY: Investigators with the American Canyon Police Department and Napa County Sheriff's Office sought the public's help in identifying the car and driver involved in the hit-and-run collision Thursday morning that left a pedestrian with major injuries. The incident happened at 8:30 a.m. during the morning commute on Broadway/state Highway 29 at Rio Del Mar, according to a news release from the American Canyon Police Department.

A white four-door sedan described as an Acura or similar make is believed to have run a red light while heading south at the SR-29 intersection with Rio Del Mar.

The pedestrian, a 55-year-old American Canyon man, was crossing the intersection heading east when he was struck by the white sedan, police said.

The driver of the car — described by witnesses as a young woman with a brown complexion — did not stop after hitting the pedestrian, even though the collision caused significant damage to the car's windshield, police said.

The pedestrian suffered major injuries but is expected to survive, police said. He received emergency medical care at the scene, then was taken by ambulance to a local hospital.

"Some witnesses attempted to follow the vehicle as it fled southbound, turning west onto Poco Way, before continuing southbound on surface streets," police officials said. "The witnesses were unable to obtain a license plate or keep up with the vehicle."

Witnesses told police there were also two young men, both who appeared to be white, in the car. One was sitting in the front passenger seat and the other in the backseat on the passenger side.

Surveillance images of the involved car were provided by police, who are asking that anyone with information about the driver or car to contact the American Canyon Police Department at 707-551-0600.
