Here's When Rain, Wind Forecast To Arrive In Napa Valley

NAPA VALLEY, CA — Rain is likely to arrive late Monday afternoon or early evening in Napa Valley as gusty winds descend on the North Bay and Bay Area.

The National Weather Service said before dawn Monday that it anticipated 1.5-2.5 inches of rain in the North Bay valleys as a "generally weak atmospheric river" heads into the region. An atmospheric river is a long, narrow channel of water vapor akin to a river in the sky.

Weather officials warned that "a change in the weather pattern is beginning to unfold as patchy but thickening high clouds are now streaming in from the west."

Rain is forecast Monday night before 10 p.m. in Napa Valley, with a thunderstorm possible after 10 p.m. Showers and thunder were again possible Tuesday morning, and rain was expected to continue into the afternoon and possibly night.

A wind advisory has been issued for most of the Bay Area, including the North Bay valleys and mountains, from 7 p.m. Monday to 3 a.m. Tuesday. South winds 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 45 mph are expected.

"Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects," the National Weather Service said. "Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result."

Weather officials were most concerned about the effect rain could have on vulnerable fire-burn scars.

"... The previous atmospheric river from Oct 24th brought twice as much rain over a longer time frame, so the main concern and item of interest will be 30- to 60-minute rain rates at gauges near or in recent burn scars," the weather service said.

"Elsewhere, look for 1.50-2.50 inches in the North Bay valleys where confidence is higher for these rain amounts; 1.00-2.00 inches in the East Bay hills and northern Monterey Bay and Big Sur area; 1.00 - 1.50 inches around San Francisco and the Bayshore; 0.25-0.50 inches around the South Bay and Monterey Bay; and less than 0.25 inches for the interior Central Coast."

Sunnier, drier skies were expected to prevail in the latter half of the week. Weather officials anticipated that the storm would enter the middle of the country midweek and the East Coast by Friday.
