NAPA — A Napa County man previously sentenced to life in prison for attempted murder was sentenced to an additional 12 years for a domestic violence attack, announced the Napa County District Attorney's Office on Friday.

Garrett Lars Elshere, 44, was found guilty by a jury of five counts of domestic violence, including two counts of corporal injury to a domestic partner, one count of false imprisonment, one count of assault with force and one count of dissuading a witness.

Napa County Judge Monique Langhorne found Elshere guilty of a separate allegation involving a previous domestic violence conviction, a prior strike and nine aggravating factors.

Elshere was found guilty of a domestic violence attack that occurred on Nov. 5, 2020 at the Napa Marriot Hotel & Spa on Solano Avenue. According to court documents, during an argument Elshere punched a woman in the face multiple times, poured vinegar on her, grabbed and squeezed her throat and vandalized a hotel room.

When the woman tried to call for help, he took her phone away and prevented her from running away, according to court documents. Elshere then held the woman up against a wall and strangled her in the hotel hallway. He escaped while the woman pulled a fire alarm for help, according to police.

Elshere was later found and arrested by the Napa Police Department.

Elshere was previously convicted in a 2015 domestic violence case, and while on bail, was found guilty of stabbing a 38-year-old man in 2021 at McPherson Elementary School.

"Mr. Elshere is a chronic and repeat domestic violence offender as well as a clear danger to public safety and the Napa Community," said Napa County Deputy District Attorney Agnes Dziadur, who prosecuted the case. "When this defendant is out of custody, he hurts people; he attacks loved ones, family members, friends, and strangers as his decades-long criminal history reflects."
