Napa Skate Yard Pushes Plan For Roller Revival: Meeting Today

A proposal on June 16 Napa Planning Commission meeting agenda would add a roller-skating rink to Napa Yard as a new recreational feature.

NAPA VALLEY, CA — Napa Yard is seeking city approval to add a permanent roller-skating rink to its First Street entertainment venue in Napa, arguing the attraction would expand family recreation, increase customer visits, and strengthen the long-term viability of the outdoor food-and-beverage destination.

The proposal would amend the existing use permit for Napa Yard at 585 First St. to allow Wheel Life Napa – At Napa Yard to operate a roller-skating rink.

According to a plan submitted with the application, the business successfully tested the concept as a temporary attraction at the Napa Valley Expo, where it averaged about 14 skaters per hour.

Napa Yard operators said a 3.5-acre outdoor venue dependent on weather creates financial challenges.

Adding a skating rink would diversify revenue sources while remaining consistent with Napa Yard's existing character, according to the proposal planning commissioners will consider today.

Plans call for constructing a covered rink using cold-formed galvanized steel framing with commercial ribbed roofing finished in a dark green roof with brown trim. Final engineering plans would be submitted after project approval.

Site plans show the proposed skating rink would occupy approximately 6,400 square feet within the Napa Yard property near the existing mini golf course, seating areas, culinary gardens, and Napa River frontage.

The rink would replace an area currently shown as open space while leaving existing parking, restrooms, and other amenities in place.

If approved, the rink would operate under the following proposed schedule:

• Monday through Thursday: 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
• Friday: 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
• Saturday: 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
• Sunday: 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The application describes the skating rink as a modest expansion of Napa Yard's existing operations that would activate underused space while adding another attraction for residents and visitors.
