New Principal Named At Canyon Oaks In American Canyon

Kay Vang comes from Fresno. Welcome!

News from the Napa Valley Unified School District:

Kay Vang, principal at Heaton Elementary School in Fresno, has been named principal of Canyon Oaks Elementary School in American Canyon, starting July 27.

She will take over from Troy Knox, who last month was named principal of McPherson Elementary School in Napa. Vang’s appointment was approved at Thursday’s meeting of the NVUSD Board of Education.

“Kay Vang brings years of outstanding experience working in diverse communities, and we are looking forward to her contributions,” said Superintendent Patrick Sweeney.

Vang has been principal at 650-student Heaton Elementary School, in Fresno Unified School District, for four years, and spent the previous 13 years at Patterson Joint Unified School District, as a teacher, instructional coach and assistant principal.

“I am looking forward to getting to know the American Canyon community, staff, families and students, and ensuring the students continue to receive the best education,” Vang said. “The project-based learning model in place is the perfect platform on which to teach the new Common Core State Standards, with their emphasis on hands-on, collaborative, critical thinking.”

Canyon Oaks Elementary School serves 716 students in grades K-5.

Vang has a bachelor’s degree from CSU Sacramento, and her master’s and doctorate, in educational leadership, from CSU Stanislaus.

Vang is planning to move to American Canyon.
