By NVOS artist Molly Corbett
I consider myself a painter. I work in acrylics, printing and collage. I have many ways of approaching the creative process. Sometimes I will choose a subject, like a landscape, or an animal, or bird and begin the painting with form and color which is inspired by nature. Other times I will let the creative process guide me by trying new techniques, materials, or color combinations, often coming up with abstract results. One approach feeds of of the other, leaving me space to explore and grow as an artist.
My studio is perched on a hill over-looking a vineyard and distant foothills. I feed birds on my studio deck daily. The windows on the north facing wall are floor to ceiling letting in great lighting for painting. It’s my piece of paradise, my sacred space.
Last year I won an award for my work at the California State Fair. This past July, I was part of a two-woman show at the Jessel Gallery. Currently my work is on display at the Upper Valley Campus of Napa Valley College.
Nature is my biggest teacher. But I also find inspiration in mundane things, like the pattern of light coming through a window, or a fabulous piece of textile found on a trip. I try to file that "aha!" moment in my memory for use later in the studio.
